This chapter is fascinating and instructive to the UK reader since there is little activity of this type here. There are Friends of the Library schemes, but they tend to be limited to the oldest university libraries like Oxford or Glasgow and to some public libraries. A Library and Information Commission report discusses best practice.

Other libraries may provide services to alumni- for example, Newcastle and Sheffield - but usually without the same fundraising context. Income generation in UK libraries tends to be by earning money, rather than by soliciting donations.
